About Us
Introduction
Established in 1883, the Sydney High School Cadet Unit is the oldest
organisation within the school. It retains a strong history of
fostering leadership and excellence with
a challenging youth development program.
SHSCU has an enviable reputation, regularly participating in international
shooting competitions as well as currently holding the Chief-of-Army
title for 23 Battalion.
Training
As a unit within Australian Army Cadets, SHSCU provides training
with a strong emphasis on teamwork, friendship, self-discipline and character
development. This includes courses in:
- Bushcraft and Survival
- First Aid
- Weapons Safety
- Radio Communications
- Ceremonial Drill; and,
- Navigation
Activities
Members of SHSCU have unique experiences. Each year they spend
up to 2 weeks in the bush spread over several camps. They are
also offered specialist or leadership courses, such as engineering.
Most courses have a low charge if any.
In the past 3 years our cadets have:
- Travelled to Canberra to assist the Sir Roden and Lady Cutler
Foundation.
- Competed for the Adventure Training Award in the mountains
of Tasmania.
- Twice launched the ANZAC Day test.
- Undertaken many field activities.
- Paraded for the Governor General on three occasions.
- Represented Australia shooting at Bisley, England; and,
- Met with the Duke of Edinburgh at Buckingham Palace.
