Julia Bowes

Julia began debating in Year 8 at Sydney Girls High School, winning the state final that year. During her time at high school, she was a state semi-finalist in the Junior Commonwealth Bank in Year 9, reaching the state final in the same competition the year after. Also in Year 10, Julia was a member of the South East Sydney Representative team that won the Junior State Debating Championships and she was awarded the Lily Gunther Memorial Trophy for the best speaker at that tournament. In her senior years, she was a member of the Combined High Schools Debating teams, was captain of debating at Sydney Girls and won the Hume Barbour for the first time in the school’s history. She captained the New South Wales Schools Debating team to victory at the National Schools Debating Championships in Perth.

In her first year at university, Julia was a grand finalist at the Australian National Debating Championships, represented Sydney University in the Firsts in the finals of the Australasian Debating Championships and was the best speaker at the Australian Women’s Debating Championships. Currently, Julia is the intervarsity director for the University of Sydney Union Debates Committee, convenor of the Australian Women’s Debating Championships 2006, coaching co-ordinator at SGHS and a coach of the CHS representative teams.

She hopes to compete at the World Championships to be held in Vancouver at the end of this year. Julia is in the second year of her Arts/Law degree and is majoring in history.
