Hamish debated from Years 7-12 at SBHS. His first debate was for the 7Bs which he lost to Trinity. His last debate was for the Combined CHS firsts which he won against the GPS team. In Year 8 at Sydney Grammar he fled a debate because he needed to go to the bathroom. This was his worst debating moment.
Hamish was selected in the combined CHS teams in 2002 and 2003. In 2003, he was selected in the NSW team that were undefeated National champions in Brisbane, winning a record 32 out of 33 adjudications. His SBHS team also won the Hume Barbour Trophy, defeating NSGHS in the final.
At university, Hamish is an active debater. In 2004 he was the only person to make the finals of Australia’s three major annual intervarsities: the Australian, Australasian and World Championships. He has twice been a semi-finalist at the Australian British Parliamentary Debating Championships, and was recently a quarter-finalist at the 2006 Australasian championships in Wellington, New Zealand. Hamish is currently the Convenor (or President) of the Sydney University debating society which is the largest and most successful university debating society in the Southern Hemisphere.
Hamish also has extensive adjudication experience. He has adjudicated in several competitions for both the independent and public school networks. He has adjudicated the State Final of the Commonwealth Bank Senior competition and Junior State Debating Championships, and this year will adjudicate the final of the Hume Barbour. This year he is coaching the CHS team with another High coach, Julia Bowes.
