Farewell to the SRC of 2008 |

No wonder what light you see it in, 2008 was a great year for the SRC. Headed by myself as president, Nicholas Wong as vice-president and Patrick Desmond as secretary, our hopes were high as we began the year. Behind our early actions, we felt an unknown confidence in what could be done for the school. However, it became quickly apparent to the SRC as a collective group that leadership was not an easy mantle to bear and that for any job that needed to be done; we would need to learn quickly and put in the hard yards. With the help of Varan Peranthan and Alex Shapilsky, the respective president and vice-president on 2007, the SRC’s hard work paid off in full through the huge successes of the Talent Quest and the Trivia Night. It was a mutual agreement throughout all members that there was no feeling comparable to running a fun event for the school and the reaction we got from them.
In retrospect, I’m glad that such success came at the other end of hard work as opposed to the cake-walk we first expected. Through the reward that came at the end of hardship, we could not only run an event for the school but also learn lessons of perseverance and persistence.
I know the SRC of 2009 will learn similar lessons throughout an equally rewarding year. Not just the executive or the senior members, but everyone involved in the SRC’s activities.
My congratulations and best wishes go to the entire SRC of ’09, particularly Dale Chen, Nelson Wang and Anirban Ghose of year 11, the new executive. I know that every year, we can continue on a legacy of pride in what we do for others.

With the new, strong foundations created, Ms Branigan continued to be Teacher Facilitator of SRC. For the first time ever in the history of SRC, the vote for president was tied between Nick Wong and David Nam. Both candidates were forced to give a speech to convince voters to their respective sides. In a moving speech, David Nam took the presidency by the slightest of margins. The year started off with a charity BBQ which raised a mediocre profit of $550. Once again, the Charities Committee was unable to organise themselves as SRC came to the rescue. The big event in 2008 was the Joint SBHS SGHS SRC Prefect Talent Quest. The Talent Quest raised in excess of $2000 for charity which was a great effort. However, there are still some more months to go and the SRC with its new structure, leadership and energy are working hard for the people who voted them in.

This year saw the SRC moving in a new direction. The catch phrase in 2007 was ’the SRC, under new management’. Mr. Webb discontinued his role in the SRC as Ms Branigan became the new and official Teacher Facilitator. Varan Perananthan took over the reigns as President and Alex Shapilsky was Vice. Large changes to the SRC occurred as the Constitution was completely changed. The upper echelons of the organisation attempted to centralise power and force its 60 members to do work. Although attendance at meetings increased which forced us to have meetings in the Student Computer Centre, the SRC continued to be inefficient. Yet it was a massive improvement from 2006. The inaugural ‘not for profit BBQ’ occurred, much to the delight of the student population. Although it was not for profit, we still ended up with a turnover of $12.65. The SRC started its new campaign to fix the bus lines. The letter sending campaign once again restarted after a year. Many charity BBQ’s occurred where the SRC were hauling in massive profits due to the employment of efficient methods. The most important thing achieved by 2007 was to change the constitution which saw the reduction of the SRC from an organisation made up of 60 people to a more manageable 36 people. The leadership group created proper and strong foundations for the SRC to grow and not return to the doldrums like it did in 2006.

Mr. Coan was still the Teacher facilitator but was forced to leave halfway during the year. A relative newcomer became SRC President did not continue the great work left by the 2005 SRC. The SRC literally hit rock bottom in 2006. However, that said, the SRC helped organise the inaugural SRC Strongman BBQ. Charity BBQ’s still continued to occur. The renovations to the school toilets after constant pestering transpired. However, the changes to the school toilets did not satisfy the SRC and the general student population. The inaugural SRC Trivia Night also took place which was meant to be a not for profit event. Somehow, the SRC managed to attain a profit of $1000. The chief organisers of the Trivia Night were two year 12 SRC boys namely Yuk-Lun Leung and Michael Maslehdani. All the successes of 2006 rode on the wave of the energy that was instilled in 2005. However, all this energy was sucked out as the SRC had no teacher facilitator for many months. The SRC effectively collapsed due to poor leadership as well as a lack of direction. Ms Branigan and Mr. Webb attempted to regain control over the SRC and cease the organisation from spiralling into a bottomless pit.

2005 saw the continued presence of Mr. Coan as the SRC still continued to be quite large. Although the SRC consisted of 50 people, only about 15 people used to turn up to meetings. However, strong leadership changed that with the inception of Kevin Kim (Vice-captain of 2006) as President. The seniors in 2005 were quite committed to the SRC and attempted to make drastic changes. The SRC Constitution was revised as a revamp of SRC occurred. More people started to turn up to meetings but junior attendance was still lacklustre. The SRC still organised many charity BBQ’s due to the Charity Committee not getting its act together on many occasions. The SRC attempted to organise the inaugural Trivia Night but plans failed due to grievances by the girls’ school. Meetings continued in room 301 and on Friday lunchtimes.
