Training
As a unit within Australian Army Cadets, SHSCU provides training with a strong emphasis on teamwork,friendship, self-discipline and character development. This includes courses in:
- Bushcraft and Survival
- First Aid
- Weapons Safety
- Radio Communications
- Ceremonial Drill
- Navigation
Activities
Members of SHSCU have unique experiences. Each year they spend up to 2 weeks in the bush spread over several camps. They are also offered specialist or leadership courses, such as engineering. Most courses have a low charge. All our cadets enjoy the activities listed below:

Bivouac
- AFX (cadet outdoor camp)
- Shooting at a rifle range
AFX is usually held just before term 4 in the holidays while live shooting happens in the term 1 holidays. If a cadet, corporal or sergeant has enough experience, he is chosen to attend course which can result in a promotion to a higher rank.
Ranking
There are 7 types of ranks in cadets which are listed below:
- Cadet Recruit
- Cadet
- Lance Corporal
- Corporal
- Sergeant
- Warrant Officer Class 2
- Warrant Officer Class 1 (rarely)
- CUO (highest ranking officer in Cadets)
